Grand Master
Tom McCarthy lives in Winthrop with his wife, Patty. They have two daughters and one son, all grown, and five grandsons. Tom’s son and one of his sons-in-law are also Masons.
Tom has been a District Court Judge for the First Judicial District since 1988. Before that, he practiced law in Winthrop and served as Sibley County Attorney for nine years.
Tom has been a member of Sibley Lodge in Winthrop for over 30 years. He is a member of York Rite, Scottish Rite, Eastern Star and Shrine. He has served on the Masonic Cancer Center Fund and has been the Masonic Chief Trial Commissioner.
In other community organizations, Tom has served as a Southeastern Minnesota Initiative Fund director from 1992-1995 and as President in 1994. Tom is a member of the Winthrop Lions Club, has served as President, and is a Lions Club International Melvin Jones Fellow.
Tom was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Minnesotans by Minnesota Jaycees in 1984 and was awarded the Community Outreach Award by the Minnesota District Judges Association in 1998 for his work assisting the development of the domestic abuse online registry in Minnesota. The Council of State Governments named Tom a Toll Fellow in 2000.
